iPhone iChat update: One-on-One, Group Video Calling, Chat Rooms unearthed in iPhone OS 4.0 SDK
After discovering an iChatAgent process running in the background, further digging into the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK has revealed more clues as to what the upcoming video calling feature might be for the iPhone.
The strings in the screenshot above suggest two video calling modes will be available on the iPhone: one-on-one video chat and group video conferencing. References to “moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video and other features” has likewise been discovered in the latest SDK. We’re not sure if these have anything to do with the actual video calling service, but based on its names, these will probably be some of the social features of Apple’s new Game Center.
Of course, at the end of the day, these are just codes which Apple could decide not to further develop or even pull out. Nonetheless, the evidence of iPhone video calling continues to grow. We’re not sure if and when it will exactly go live, but we’re being optimistic about the whole situation and hoping that Apple will introduce it along with the launch of the 4G iPhone this June.

Having video chat on the iPhone would make up for no camera on the iPad for me. I hope it happens.
